Bulli
Steeped in heritage, located by gorgeous stretches of beach, and with convenient transport links, Bulli is the perfect place to couples looking for a lifestyle without sacrificing their careers, and families who want to enjoy a laidback coastal lifestyle.
Bulli has a mix of everything when it comes to homes: from former workers’ cottages on large blocks, to designer homes along the beach, there’s a diverse range of housing to suit lifestyles and budgets. Bulli is fast becoming a popular suburb for people wanting to move out of Sydney’s sprawl. With lifestyle options, stunning beaches, and with easy access to Wollongong and Sydney, it’s not hard to see why.
Brief History
The original inhabitants of this land were local Dharawal communities of Aboriginal people. The original Aboriginal name for the area was Bulla or Bulla Bulla, meaning “two mountains”. After settlement, early land grants were made, however, it was not until 1850 when Bulli coalfield was opened that Bulli came into prominence. In 1867, Bulli Pass was built to improve access. Several historic buildings still exist in Bulli, including Bulli Family Hotel (1889), Denmark Hotel and Stables (1877), Methodist Manse and Church (1865) and Bulli Cemetery (1876). For a full history, see Wollongong City Council’s website.
Getting Around
Perfect for working couples and families, Bulli is easy to access with both public transport and motorway connections. Drive from Wollongong via Memorial Drive, and to Sydney via Bulli Pass and the M1, or catch the train to Bulli Station for connections to Sydney or Wollongong.
Things to do
One of the highlights of Bulli is its proximity to the coast. The stretch of shared path through Bulli offers cyclists, joggers and walkers some of the best coastal scenery in the region. The suburb is home to several well-known sprouting clubs, from Bulli FC to the Bulli Surf lifesaving club and more, weekend sports for kids and adults are well covered.
